Art Journal Pages

It’s the start of a new semester!  There is a lot of excitement with all of the new classes and new students embarking on the beginning of their art experience for the year.  One of the topics I have talked about with all of the sixth and seventh grade students this week is art journal pages.  Journal pages are works of art that students do independently in their sketchbook for homework.  These provide students the opportunity to work with subject matters and materials that are interesting to them.  They can be collages, drawings, paintings, or something done completely outside the box.  I encourage students to do something that is inspiring to them, to be creative, and have fun with these.  It is their time to express themselves and show off what they can do on their own.

There are a total of six journal pages due over the course of the entire semester which equals out to about one page a month.  Each grade has been given a list of topics in case they need some inspiration.  The lists are also posted on the Edline Art page.

The video above is a short collection of journal pages created by select students last semester.  I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!  I can’t wait to see what second semester students come up with!

What's Happening this week in the Coolidge Art Room?

There are only three more weeks left in the first semester at Coolidge.  This means that students who had art first semester will be wrapping up their art experience for the year.  Students that have not had art yet this year will be starting on January 24th.

This week the 8th grade elective classes are going on a field trip to the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston.  They will spend an hour touring the museum with a guide and then another hour making art based on some of the things that inspired them on the trip.  We are really excited for this experience!

Please continue to check out the Www.Artsonia.com website. We currently have 325 pieces of Coolidge art on display.  It is a great way to keep up to date on what students are doing in art class.  Parents can register their e-mail addresses to recieve updates when their child has new artwork on display.  Additional friend and family members can register for updates by becoming "fan club" members to a specific student.
